LEEDing the Way
Jim Schuessler, Landscape Architecture Associate, BNIM
SPONSORED BY FRONTIER FARM CREDIT
Obtaining LEED certification on building and landscape projects is about saving money, conserving energy, reducing water use, and improving improving homes and communities. But what does that mean for landscape projects? With over 16 years of experience as a landscape architect and land planner and 7 years of LEED registration, Jim Schuessler will share with us how LEED works, why it works for landscapes and how it is best for growers and landscape contractors to work on LEED projects.

Sustainable Substrates for Kansas
Dr. Cheryl Boyer, Assistant Professor, Kansas State University
Pine bark and peatmoss prices (and availability) go up and down constantly. For most growers in the Great Plains, shipping your potting material (or components) is not an option: We simply don't have many pine plantations in the region. What can you do to have more control over your substrate? Here in Kansas we've evaluated Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) as an alternative component with quite a bit of success. In this talk, Cheryl will share with you what they've learned in substrate research at K-Sate in the last 5 years.

Producing Native Plants for Use in Urban Landscape Projects
Elliott Duemler, Nursery Manager, Applied Ecological Services
Ecological restoration using container-grown native plants is a growing area for nursery and landscape projects. Are there special requirements for growing plants and installing landscapes for these projects? Elliott Duemler will explain some of the challenges he faces to meet the demands of projects specifying native plants in order to fulfill the needs of these specialized environments.

Increasing Nursery Efficiency and Profits with Automation
Dr. Jim Owen, Jr., Assistant Professor, VirginiaTech
SPONSORED BY LOMA VISTA NURSERY
Incredible advances in nursery have been made in recent years with the collaboration of several universities and specialists via the national Specialty Crop Block Grant program. Among those advances are several for nursery automation. Dr. Owen has been instrumental in the development of a tractor-mounted caliper measuring/counting device that can help with field-grown tree inventory. Another in-development tool is the "multicopter" which is a drone-like machine that can count container-grown inventory from the sky. What else is on the horizon?!

IPM Meets Laser Tag: Grower-Approved Techniques and Novel Intelligent Sprayers Win Big
Dr. Amy Fulcher, Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee
SPONSORED BY USDA NIFA IPM PROGRAM
Amy will cover low and high tech strategies growers can use to combat pests and save money. From scouting and other grower-approved IPM techniques to apps, iBooks, and more, Dr. Fulcher will discuss practical use of technology to your nursery. Dr. Fulcher's presentation will feature a revolutionary laser-guided sprayer being developed by the USDA-ARS and tested with partners at the University of Tennessee, Ohio State University, and Oregon State University. The sprayer “sees” plants and applies only the amount of pesticide necessary based on the plants’ size and shape. The economic savings and environmental benefits from this targeted application technology are impressive! You’ll hear more about how the Intelligent Sprayer gets pesticides on plants and keeps them out of the soil, water and air (and keeps dollars in your wallet)!

Pot-in-Pot: Can You Dig It?
Ben Cecil, Operations Manager, Loma Vista Nursery
SPONSORED BY BWI
There's field-grown production and container-grown production. Both have their pros and cons. The hybrid pot-in-pot system could be a solution for your operation, particularly for growing large trees in containers. Loma Vista Nursery recently installed a new pot-in-pot production facility at their Ottawa facility. Ben will share some of the challenges and opportunities they encountered when developing their new system.

Plant Something! Roundtable discussion
led by Cheryl Goar, Executive Director of the Arizona Nursery Association
The Arizona Nursery Association seized the bull by the horns with their recent Specialty Crop Block Grant to develop a national marketing plan for nursery crops. The result is "Plant Something!" an effort which is making a significant impact across the U.S. How are other states participating? How can Great Plains states participate? What are the benefits of the program and how can you get involved?

Don't Get "Bored" By Wood-Boring Insects: Insect Borers in Nursery Production
Dr. Raymond Cloyd, Professor, Kansas State University
Wood-boring insects are most definitely not "boring;" however, they can present a significant problem in nursery production systems. Correctly identifying wood-boring insects and understanding their biology and life cycles are important in effectively dealing with them, especially with insecticides. This session will provide guidelines on how to develop an effective plan in managing wood-boring insects in both nurseries and landscapes.
